New standards in the wire industry

In 2013, Max W. Claas GmbH & Co. KG completed an impressive project with the construction of its new wire plant and a hall area covering more than 12,000 m² in the Grünewiese district of Altena, setting new standards in the wire industry.

Expansion through halls 7 and 8

In 2018, construction work began on the new halls 7 and 8, with a further area of more than 3,000 m², which was successfully completed in 2020. State-of-the-art drawing, heating and surface technologies enable the production of cold heading wires, spring wires, C-wires and tool steel wires in round and profiled diameters of up to 50 mm. International customers include companies around the world in the field of automotive, joining and forming technology and tool industries.

Claas Products

Cold heading wire

For the production of fasteners and cold extruded parts with demanding requirements for cold workability. Optimum conditions for the material structure, surface finish, geometry and mechanical properties.

Heat treatable spring steel wire

For the production of springs with special properties. Cr-alloyed, V-alloyed and Mo-alloyed variants. Design with the highest possible degree of moulding.

Tool steel wire

For the manufacturing of high-quality tools such as screwdriver blades, angle screwdrivers, drills, punches, chisels, knives and extrusion tools. Cr-alloyed, V-alloyed and Mo-alloyed variants with extremely good forming properties.

Quality steel wires for the manufacturing of sophisticated products that are produced by bending, heading, rolling or tooling. Infinitely variable C-range from 0.02 % to 0.95 % is available.

Drawing technology Claas

The drawing shop of Max W. Claas GmbH & Co. KG enables the drawing of wires with diameters of 1.50 - 50.00 mm.

Customised wires are drawn on modern single and multiple drawing machines with a high demand for optimum product geometry and the best possible homogeneity of the annealing structure. Production tolerances are monitored online by using laser measuring equipment. Optimised process sequences ensure short throughput times and a consistently high quality of the drawn wires.

Pickling technology Claas

New standards in surface treatment

The surface treatment plant at CLAAS consists of three pickling lines for the production of bright, phosphate-free wire surfaces and a conventional line with phosphating, reactive soaping, polymer coating and neutralisation for ring diameters of up to 2,000 mm and weights of up to 5,000 kg. With this ultra-modern system, Claas sets new standards in surface treatment.

Annealing technology Claas

Two modern hood annealing lines featuring HICON®-H²-annealing technology

Two modern hood annealing lines featuring HICON®-H²-annealing technology, fully automatic programme sequence, 6 sockets, 3 heating hoods, 3 cooling hoods as well as automated CQI-9 annealing processes and socket capacities of 65 t achieve spheroidization degrees of up to 100 % and guarantee repeatable microstructure properties. Thanks to state-of-the-art hydrogen high convection annealing technology with the corresponding inert gas effect, classic annealing defects are eliminated. At Max W. Claas GmbH & Co. KG, the heat that is generated and dissipated during heat treatment is utilised to operate the underfloor heating of the entire production area, offices and common rooms. The heat recovery from the flue gas of the annealing plant is fed into the heating system of the surface treatment plant, thus reducing natural gas consumption by 40 %. We aim to utilise green hydrogen in the near future.
